After Kars fell under the rule of the Russians, a weekly Russian newspaper began to be published in 1883 named Kars. This paper reached 300 editions. Other Russian newspapers also came to Kars, among them one published in Trabzon by Bolshevik soldiers named Trabzonskaya Pravda” and Pravda coming directly from Russia.

Following the 1917 February revolution in Russia, a newspaper published by Armenian liberals called Banwor arrived, as well as two more Armenian newspapers that took the Dashnak side and were named Ashatavori Dzajn and Dirkerum.

In Turkish, two newspapers published in Azeribaijan,Molla Nasreddin and Tercuman, were distributed in Kars. Riza Karasarov published Yeni Hursit newspaper in 1918 in Kars and Sadayi Millet from Batumi, and Albayrak from Erzurum was published to promote republican ideas. Today nine local newspapers are published, and there are also three local radio stations and a television channel broadcasting in Kars.

Translated as “Modern Kars Newspaper”, it started in 2002 and sells about 500 copies.

SERHAT TV AND RADIO
Kars’ only TV station has been broadcasting since 1993, starting each day at 7am and ending at11.30pm. A thorough bulletin of local news is shown at 8.30pm every night. It also has a 24 hour radio station which can be listened to at the 93.3 frequency. It plays mostly Turkish pop music, with evenings spared for Turkish folk or protest music. On Thursdays between 7-8pm there is a jazz program.

95.5 RADIO KAFKAS
Meaning Caucasus Radio, it is a 24 hour radio station which plays mostly Turkish music but also broadcasts national news.

99.3 KAYA FM
This channel broadcasts between 7.30 am and midnight. It is all music programs but unlike others in the early morning between 7 and 9 am you can experience ashik music, and between 3 and 6pm western music is played. On Fridays from 9 am to noon, religious music is played.
